Stumps sure aren’t pretty! but that’s not the only reason to grind old that stump away…
With the Gold Coast summer on its way now is the time for tree stump removal. Not only are old tree stumps an eyesore, did you know that they can harbour termites?
Over the years, there have been numerous times where I have been called out to grind an old tree stump away only to find it termite-infested!
Termite infestation in your tree stump?
Termites are wood-boring insects that thrive in damp, dark and decaying conditions. These critters think like ‘engineers’ and will sneakily eat their way through the middle of an old tree stump to make a nest in its core. Termites won’t eat the outside of a stump if they did, they wouldn’t have walls for their nest; this is what makes termites hard to detect.
It is safe to say that if you have a termite infestation in an old stump near your home that they will eventually attack your house and any foundations, no one wants that! Even on large or rural property termites will eventually spread to other decaying stumps or dying trees around your property causing long term issues.
What to do?
So, what do you if you discover termites in an old stump? firstly, if you haven’t already discovered an infestation it is good practice to conduct an annual pest inspection through professional pest control experts; especially in climates, we live in such as the Gold Coast, Tweed Coast and the Byron Bay area. But, if you have already identified that you do have termites the best option is to call in a professional straight away; to kill the nest and stop the infestation at the core. Once the termites have been eradicated call a stump grinder in to finish the job; stump grinding will remove the tree stump completely this ensures our little and extremely damaging wood-boring friends won’t return.
Decaying stumps can also attract snakes and insects; like other types of ants that create colonies, spiders and wasps they will use the environment to either hide, nest or to take advantage of the decaying wood and fertile soil around the base. Tree stump removal will dramatically reduce the likelihood of any kind of infestation on your property.
